BioShock Infinite DLC's playable Elizabeth won't be "Booker in a dress"

Irrational Games level designer Amanda Jeffrey says playing as Elizabeth in BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea won't be like playing Booker.

Irrational Games has spoken about playing as Elizabeth in the upcoming , saying that the team is working on making sure the sequences don't feel like playing "Booker in a dress."

#147;With the player getting the opportunity to see how Liz is experiencing the world through first person, we have to be ever so careful to not betray what the player has already experienced of Liz in Infinite and what they're going to experience of Liz in the first part of the DLC,#147; said level designer Amanda Jeffrey .

BioShock Infinite's Burial at Sea, which is set in Rapture as opposed to BioShock Infinite's Columbia, is split over two parts, with the perspective changing from Booker to Elizabeth at the conclusion of the first chapter.

#147;That's always foremost in our mind, because Liz is such a different character to Booker, and if we were to just put Booker in a dress, then that would be the most awful betrayal of what we're doing for Liz, and players would just feel like it was a cheap way out, and that's not something that we want to do. So we don't have all of the answers yet for it, but we are very, very, very much aware of all of the dangers that we need to try and avoid.#147;

According to Jeffrey, Elizabeth's sequences might even avoid combat entirely. #147;Elizabeth has to take things more from the side view,#147; she said. #147;She needs to be kind of thinking in a roundabout way of how to deal with her enemies. And, sometimes, that might mean completely bypassing the enemy entirely, because she doesn't need to.

The switch between Booker and Elizabeth is triggered by a particular event, said Irrational Games boss Ken Levine. #147;I#147;m not gonna say what happens, but at the end of the first part of Burial at Sea, Elizabeth goes into another sort of realization and, to put you then in her shoes, we thought was gonna be something very powerful,#147; he said.

Liz in Burial at Sea will also be aware of the events of BioShock Infinite, Levine adds. #147;She is very much Elizabeth, but also has a character. She#147;s affected. She#147;s definitely changed by what she#147;s done. I will say certainly you are picking up after the events of Infinite, and this is a person who has seen all the things you#147;ve seen in Infinite, and that#147;s had an effect on her.#147;

Jeffrey also spoke about how the player will be able to control Liz's unique tear abilities. #147;I hesitate to say too much about what we have just now," she said, "because it's entirely possible it will change in the next few weeks. I will say, though, that Elizabeth and her tear abilities are not necessarily a #147;win button.#147;"

"She has an understanding of this universe and the various universes that she can visit, and she knows, once again, constants and variables. There are some things that she can change, and some things that just won't make a difference if she changes them or not. So she's not entirely godlike in her abilities. She will have far more powerful ways of interacting with the world than we saw in Infinite proper, but at the same time, it won't just be a case of walking to a space and going, #147;I'm just going to press a button, and now happy ending for everyone!#147; Because, on the one hand, that wouldn't be any fun. And on the other hand, I think that, unfortunately, things are never gonna be that easy for Liz. She has to fight for her happy endings. She's never that happy.#147;

Levine says tech like Chromecast is where gaming will go

Added: 06.08.2013 18:08 | 13 views | 0 comments

Irrational Games head says the future lies in allowing players the experience to play on whatever device they like.

Irrational Games head Ken Levine has said he is excited about the effect technology like Google's Chromecast might have on video games in the future.

, Levine said the main differentiator between the next-generation consoles is their unique services. "From a hardware perspective, the PC and the Xbox and the PS4 are very much similar beasts in a lot of ways now," he said. "It's more about the software on top of it and the services they provide.

"What I'm excited about--you saw that Google dongle that came out the other day?--is something like that for games."

Google's Chromecast is a $35 HDMI peripheral that allows streaming of services like Netflix and the mirroring of computer screens. Sony has created a similar idea with its Remote Play interoperability between PlayStation 4 and Vita,

One of the key principles of Nintendo's Wii U is also that users can play games on the screen when the television is in use.

Levine thinks the experience of allowing people to play games anywhere is now more important than having one central device in the living room. "People want to talk about owning the living room. I don't think the living room matters that much any more," he said.

"It's about wherever you want to game and having your experience. I'm not just saying playing an iPhone game, I'm saying having your game--your big, hardcore game--playing on whatever screen you wanted.

"I think that kind of technology is going to be something that's really important for gamers, because you want to be able to pick up your experience and move it somewhere else."

"The technology's there--it's actually very, very cheap," Levine said last week. "I'm just waiting for someone to do it, because letting gamers define their experience--how they play it, where they play it--that's where it's going. Gamer-driven experiences. That's what excites me."

Storytelling in Video Games: Tools Create Rules

Added: 05.08.2013 18:19 | 13 views | 0 comments

In early 2013, Ken Levine, the creative director for Irrational Games Bioshock Infinite, hosted an Ask Me Anything session (AMA) on Reddit.com. In one of his responses, Levine explained some of the basic things to making a game that he learned since his first release. In regards to stories in single-player games, Levine briefly stated, make sure the story suits the storytelling tools you have. The comment seems like a simple, obvious piece of gaming common sense that instinctively slipped into his fingers while he was typing. The statement is, in fact, a powerful, demanding piece of advice. It presents an issue that modern triple-A developers have clearly tried to avoid, and highlights some of the problems with game storytelling that have emerged as a result.
